What is CMYK?
CMYK stands for Cyan, Magenta Yellow, Key (or Black). The letter ‘K’ is used because it is an abbreviation for the printing term ‘key plate.’ It is also the last letter of the work black and ‘k’ is not present in the other colours.
These are the basic colours used for printing full colour images.
CMYK refers to the four ink plates used in offset printing. The ‘K’ in CMYK stands for ‘Key’ as the cyan, magenta and yellow printing plates are carefully aligned with the black key plate.
When you blend these colours together they get darker. When you blend cyan, magenta and yellow with 100% black you get a beautiful deep, rich black . But that’s another blog!
When to use CMYK?
Use CMYK for any project that will be printed, not viewed on a screen. If you need to recreate your design with ink the CMYK mode will give you more accurate results.

PDF’s are ideal for CMYK files. They should get married because they are compatible with most programs!
What is RGB?
RGB stands for Red, Green, Blue. These colours are used for creating images on a computer screen.
When equal amounts of the RGB primary colours are at their highest level, the resulting color is white.
A designer can control aspects of their project by modifying these three colours. Because it’s done digitally, the designer can manipulate the light on the screen to create the colour they want.
When to use RGB?
When the end result of your project is a digital screen, use RGB mode.
