The first Melbourne Cup race was held in 1861.

The Melbourne Cup is one of the worlds richest turf races.

Phar Lap won the 1930 Melbourne Cup. He was in hiding before the race after an attempt was made to shoot him. Phar Lap also competed in 1929 and 1931.
