5 Essentials for an Australia Day BBQ
Blazing hot sun. The smell of freshly cooked food coming from the grill. Great company. Australia Day celebrations can be fair dinkum fantastic – and not just because you’ve got a day off work. Here are 5 things to prepare or remember if 2017 is your year to host the Aussie Day BBQ.
- The Tucker
It’s not a barbecue without fresh food. Prawns, lamb, steak or sausages – whatever your crew prefers, make sure you stock up. Because nobody skips seconds on Australia Day. Don’t forget to complement your meaty servings with some light summer salads and delicious desserts (did someone say pavlova?). You’ll need an Esky to keep the sweet treats from melting too quickly.
- Stubby Holders
Speaking of keeping things cool, make sure everyone at your party has a good stubby holder on standby. Otherwise you’ll have people sculling their alcohol way too quickly or complaining about their hot beers. If your Australia Day BBQ is actually a public event or – heaven forbid – a work function, why not order some stubby holders with your logo on them?
- Aussie Beats
Get on Spotify or burst out your old CDs to create a true-blue playlist to play in the background of your celebrations. This is the one day of the year when AC/DC and Kylie Minogue mix well together. Other classics to add include Great Southern Land and Down Under, obviously.
- The Perfect Space
Does your home have a nice patio and spacious backyard? If it does, great! Clean up your outdoor area, add some Aussie décor, and you’re good to go. If not, it’s time to scope out the local parks for a great space for your Australia Day party. You’ll need to arrive early to get the best area. Or, if you’re lucky enough to live near a beach, you’ve got a good back-up option!
- Backyard Cricket
Loving the Big Bash League? Or just need a way to keep the kids entertained? Whether you’re hanging with mates or BBQing with the extended family, a backyard cricket set is a quintessential Australia Day item. Hit ‘em for 6 until you get caught. Then sneak over to the Esky and finish the pavlova while nobody’s watching.
How will you be spending Australia Day? Remember the essentials above and you’re sure to have a blast – whether you’re waltzing Matilda or doing the Eagle Rock.
